Choose the perfect season for your wedding

Spring, summer, autumn or winter wedding?

You may instinctively know already what the feel of your wedding will be or you may still need to throw a few ideas around. The possibilities are endless and can add such an individual touch to your day. If you are stuck with choosing a theme, then think about the time of year you are planning to get married. Some themes go hand in hand with particular seasons so this will help you decide.

Use the seasons to guide you when setting your wedding date

Spring wedding

Spring is a season of new life and growth, a perfect time to celebrate love and make a new start. It is also the third most popular time of year to get married so you may find it easier to book some of the more popular venues and maybe at a discounted rate.

A natural choice for a spring time wedding is to choose soft pastel colours, tulips, daffodils and decorated baskets of eggs. Favours of seeds, bulbs or chocolate eggs also add to the spring theme. As a fun addition to your wedding you could arrange an egg hunt around the venue.

Summer wedding

Unsurprisingly summer is the most popular time of year to get married. Combining the gorgeous weather with an abundance of beautiful flowers you can enjoy spending your wedding outdoors.

There is much more possibility in the summer when choosing your venue, with more space available to open up to the great outdoors. Summer settings such as the garden or beach are always a good place to start. Have a beach bonfire and BBQ with fresh seafood while the sun sets. Beach themes bring a much more casual approach to the dress code too. Groomsmen always look so handsome in linen suits with open collars!

Take your wedding into the garden for a picnic with beautiful rugs, cushions and bunting all around. You and your guests could play games or you could even hire an ice cream van to serve your loved ones ice cream treats.

Summertime brings a wealth of wonderful food and drink; plump juicy strawberries, vine tomatoes and fresh seafood. Flowers such as roses, gerberas, orchids or even sunflowers are perfect to continue a summer theme. Favours don’t have to be something your guest will keep for a long time so fruits of the season at the dinner table tied with a pretty ribbon can be very effective.

Autumn wedding

The natural spectacular of colour in autumn make this a great time to get married. Early on and you can still catch some late summer sunshine without the full glare and heat of the summer months. Pick a venue which shows the season off to its best; tree lined venues and forest backdrops demand attention and set the scene for the day.

A vineyard or orchard makes an ideal setting as here you are surrounded by natural beauty. Transform a barn into the perfect venue with wheat stacks, straw bales and pumpkins contrasted with clean, crisp lined tables cloths and lanterns.

Serve up mulled cider and pumpkin soup, enjoy the fruits of summer and celebrate the harvest. Flowers such as hydrangeas and dahlias continue the seasonal theme and russet burnt colours against ivory silk will look striking.

Bring the season into your party favours by giving out toffee apples, pumpkin or sunflower seeds or make your very own blend of spices for mulled wine. And of course no autumn wedding is complete without an amazing firework display to end the celebrations with a bang!

Winter wedding

Winter time brings us all indoors, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing when it comes to your wedding. Holidays like Christmas and Valentine's Day add romance, with the chance of snow or a perfect crisp, bright day. Or celebrate new beginnings with a wedding on New Year's Eve adding a splash of glamour with themes like black and white, diamonds or even Hollywood old style glamour.

Here you have a great opportunity to play around with lights as the days are shorter. Beautiful thick church candles create a flickering around the room and casts you in a flattering light. Take every opportunity to adorn your venue with twinkling lights and outdoor torches as people enter the venue.

Winter whites accented with silver or gold are ideal for Christmas weddings, or incorporate holly and winter flowers such as hyacinths and snow drops with icy crystals and diamonds. Serve up mulled wine and roasted meats with hearty soup and Christmas pudding.

Treat your guests to favours like a personalised sachet of hot chocolate or a beaded snowflake to hang on the tree. Or add some humour with woollen mittens for your guest to wear when they light the sparklers outside.
