  • All about make-up brushes (part 2 of 2)

    What brushes do I need?

Unless you are a make-up artist, there really is no need to have a huge collection of make-up brushes.  If you would like to invest in a set, but are not sure where to start, or what types of brushes to get-then here are some of my top, make-up brush "must have" recommendations.

All about make-up brushes (part 2 of 2)

    1 Foundation Brush

Is a must have make-up brush for your collection-a foundation brush is designed to help foundation application looking even and smooth.

    2 Concealer Brush

A concealer brush is used for hiding dark under eye circles, spots, areas of skin discolouration and broken capillaries. I personally like to use concealer brushes that are small and flat (please refer to image above) these are useful for getting into creases under eyes.

3 4 x Eye Shadow Brushes (Large, medium, small, blender)

I do recommend four eye shadow brushes, in a variety of sizes. I advise a selection of brushes, as it helps achieve a "Smokey" look.

3.1 Large eye shadow brush- used to apply the eye shadow base colour, to entire lid.

3.2 Medium eye shadow brus- is used to add colour on the lower lid.

3.3 Small eye shadow brush- for eyelid sockets and lid corners.

3.4 A fluffy eye shadow blending brush- to blend and soften shadow.

    4 Brow Brush

I personally like to use a brow brush with coarse bristles. These are great for applying brow powder, to enhance and define brow shape.

    5 Blusher Brush

Blusher brushes can be found in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. I find small angled brushes best-Please see image attached.

    6 Powder Brush

The powder brush should usually be the largest brush of your collection. These are used just to sweep away loose and excess powder from the skin.

    7 Lip Brush

Lipstick looks so much better when applied with a brush-rather than directly from the stick. A brush gives far more precision in application.

    How to store brushes?

As already mentioned, make-up brushes last, and so long as you take good care of them. Brushes can be stored in a number of ways: a craft box, large pencil case, a pot on your dressing table, or in a brush wrap-these are available from make-up artist suppliers such as Guru Emporium and Royal and Langnickle. But just a note! I do not recommend putting brushes in the same bag as your cosmetic items-as it could distort and spoil brush bristles.

    How to clean brushes?

As a makeup artist, I have to make sure I clean and sanitise brushes, after use on every client. But your own brushes should be cleaned at least every two of weeks. Brushes accumulate dirt, bacteria and grease-therefore keeping them clean will reduce chances of blackheads and breakouts.

To clean brushes, you can use a specialist make-up brush cleanser. These can be purchased from most cosmetic brands, or even a baby shampoo will do. Make sure to rinse out cleanser/shampoo thoroughly, and then lye brushes flat to dry.

    Until next time,

    Happy Make-uping!
