How to keep feet in great condition all year round

Feet are probably one of the most neglected parts of the body, especially during the winter months when we keep them tucked away under our thick woolly socks…that is of course until the strappy sandal season arrives.
For any lady who is getting married, she wants to look every inch perfect! So besides having the beautiful hair up do, flawless make-up, perfectly manicured hands, it’s also just as important for her to have perfect looking feet and toes.
If you are a bride to be reading this article, I would most certainly advise a course of regular pedicures prior to your wedding date, as you will most certainly benefit from them. However there are a few tips that I would like to share with you to help keep your feet in great condition all year round.

Relieve foot pressure
A great way to relax and relieve pressure from your feet is to treat your feet to a relaxing foot bath. Fill a bowl with warm water and add some aromatherapy oils. Essential oils are effective because they penetrate skin and enter the bloodstream- lavender is an ideal choice for relaxation and peppermint is great or feet as it is cooling, helping to reduce inflammation.(Please avoid essential oils during pregnancy)
How to avoid hard skin
Avoid hard thickened skin by keeping feet well hydrated. The reason why some people suffer with hard skin is due to feet being dehydrated for a long period of time, or ill fitting foot wear. Hard skin on the feet is not only uncomfortable but also unsightly. Never be tempted to cut away skin using a razor or knife as the skin will grow back thicker plus you also risk cutting yourself. Instead, use a foot file daily and apply moisturiser afterwards. If the skin is too hard to remove, it is advisable to visit a chiropodist or invest in having a callus peel with a beauty therapist.
Prevent ingrown toe nails
Ingrown toe nails are usually caused by cutting toe nails incorrectly or wearing stockings that are too small. To avoid ingrown toe nails, always cut or file nails straight across (never rounded)
How to keep feet looking bright and fresh
Don’t forget to exfoliate your feet! Exfoliation makes your feet look brighter and more refreshed. You can make a really effective foot scrub at home: mix some sugar, lemon and olive oil together. Lemon is a well known remedy for brightening the skin.
Eliminate foot odour
Some people do suffer with foot odour, especially when feet become to warm. In order to prevent odour; avoid plastic shoes, polyester and nylon socks, and always opt for cotton socks instead. If you would like to make feet smell fresher, there are many foot sprays available on the market. However Surgical spirit is also very effective for freshening up feet.
Feet Facts
Now just for a bit of fun I have decided to end this article with a few interesting and fascinating facts about feet!
- The average person will walk 128,000km in a lifetime, which is equivalent to walking three times around the earth
- A quarter of all the body’s bones are in the feet as there are 52 bones in a pair of feet
- There are up to 250,000 sweat glands in each foot, and is the reason why feet tend to have a strong odour.

gem82 'Hard skin is caused by high pressure on certain areas of the foot, can be due to footwear or the structure of the foot. Moisturing will keep the skin soft but won't prevent hard skin as dehydration is not a cause of hard skin. Hard skin doesn't grow back thicker once removed, it may grow back quicker but removing it doesn't make it thicker. :)' added 21st Mar 2012
