How to prevent acne and spots (part 2 of 2)

Apr0420129:26 a.m.

Following up from last week’s article, I explained how acne and spot breakouts can be caused by using incorrect products on the skin and due to other external factors. This week, I wanted to draw your attention to acne caused by internal imbalance.

Acne can be a reaction of toxins being released from the body

Through experience, most cases of acne are a result of stress, hormones, or consuming too many processed foods, that have caused a build up of bodily toxins. The skin is an organ of elimination- acne is simply just a reaction of toxins being released.

How to prevent acne and spots (part 2 of 2)

Eliminate foods that stimulate and cause stress to the body

In recent years there has been an ever growing awareness that caffeine and dairy products can trigger acne. Caffeine is believed to cause skin breakouts because it causes internal chemical imbalance. To make it easy to understand, here is my explanation of what happens, once caffeine is consumed: Adrenal glands produce the hormones: Cortisol, testosterone, oestrogen and progesterone. Caffeine is a drug and just as with any other drug it affects bodily chemicals and balance. Once caffeine has been consumed it causes neurons in the brain to start firing, stimulating the pituitary gland. High levels of Cortisol are released, putting strain on the adrenal glands as it sends the body into “fight or flight” response. When the “fight or flight” response occurs, it has the same effect on your body as if you were being chased by an angry dog. As a result heart rate, blood pressure increases and the internal body becomes highly stressed-So not only does caffeine put your body under stress, but also stimulates the gland that releases hormones.

Eat  plenty of green leafy vegetables

So my advice to anyone who suffers from acne or spots should start by cleaning up their diet. This means to eliminate food produce that is highly processed, reduce toxins and choose easily digestible foods. These include: leafy greens, including spinach, kale, lettuce, fruits, vegetables and grains such as quinoa and millet. Another piece of advice to make it easier in selecting the best foods for your skin, is to choose ones that grow naturally. If you find it difficult to eat enough fruit and vegetables, it is definitely worth purchasing a juice maker- I have one of these and they are a great investment for good skin health and often more effective than expensive skin creams.

Reduce mental and emotional stress

Acne caused by mental or emotional stress is a common problem, but there are plenty of easy ways to reduce it: such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing and regular exercise. It is also important to supplement your diet with Vitamin C during periods of stress. This will not only help your skin health but overall health and well-being, as vitamin C depletes in the body during periods of high stress.

If you have any great tips for reducing acne, please feel free to share and comment below.

Until next time,

Happy Make-uping!

  • hannah 'Great post! I used to suffer really badly with my skin and found that changing my diet (particularly cutting out sugar and dairy) helped a lot. Also switching to natural skin products and makeup made a big difference. My number one favourite thing for reducing acne is manuka honey as it is great for spots and also acne scars. I use a natural skin cream made from manuka honey and other natural oils.' added 4th Apr 2012

  • Charlene_Evason 'Thank you Hannah! I too love Manuka Honey it is a fantastic natural anti-bacterial product-great for calming and soothing the skin and also drawing out impurities. @Weddingtastic-Thank you, so many people suffer with spots during times of stress, because it causes so many chemical imbalances within the body. Of course the best way to heal these types of spots is to find ways to reduce stress;)' added 25th Apr 2012
