Keep skin healthy and safe in the sun

Aug0120129:26 a.m.

It has been so nice to finally see some sunshine over the past couple of weeks. I’m sure you will agree-a little sun and a hint of a tan can make you look and feel so much better!

As many of us are well aware, we do need to be cautious when exposed to UV rays. Ultraviolet light can cause skin damage, and premature ageing. Our skin is the largest organ of the body and one of its main functions is to protect. When exposed to UV rays, the skin will naturally protect itself by producing pigment called melanin, which we all know as a tan!

In moderation, the sun is very good for our health, because it is a good source of vitamin D. In today’s article I wanted to share some tips about staying safe and keeping skin healthy whilst in the sun.

Keep skin healthy and safe in the sun

  • Wear a moisturiser daily on the face that contains a sun protection factor. (SPF) It is an essential tip for reducing premature ageing.
  • If you are taking a dip in the pool or sea, always towel dry afterwards. Water droplets can act as mini magnifying glasses, which will intensify the strength of the suns rays.
  • Drink plenty of water and fruit juice whilst in the sun, to keep your body and skin hydrated.
  • Consume lots of raw fruits and vegetables, antioxidant rich foods help protect skin against sun damage.
  • When applying sunscreen, make sure to pay extra attention to delicate areas of the body, such as nose, ears, and feet. Always wear a hat to prevent the scalp from burning.
  • Do not expose just waxed or shaven skin to the sun, as it can cause skin sensitivities and/or rashes.
  • If your skin does burn, apply pure Aloe Vera gel to the area, this is extremely cooling and soothing.

Choosing an SPF

The beauty industry is saturated with SPF products, but it is important to do your research before purchasing one. A large majority of SPF's contain large amounts of chemical ingredients, that can often cause skin irritations and have other negative health effects. When choosing an SPF make sure it is paraben free, and avoid SPF products with the following ingredients: Retinyl Palmitate, Oxybenzone, Benzophenone-3 (B-3) and Amino Benzoic Acid. The best sunscreen protection products should contain Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide.

Enjoy the sun and it's health benefits

Over the years it has been advised that we should apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before going out in the sun. The recommendations are now changing, as there have been growing cases of Vitamin D deficiency. Medical professionals are now starting to recommend small amounts of sun exposure without SPF, but these guidelines vary, depending on where you are in the world. However, if you live in a country that has many dark winter months and not much sunlight, you may benefit by taking vitamin D supplements.

Until I see you here next time, enjoy the sunshine but do take careSmile

 Happy Make-uping!

  • Charlene_Evason 'Hi Hannah, if you wear mineral make-up on your face and it has an SPF, then yes it will protect your face. You do not have to wear an additional SPF. Glad to hear you have enjoyed my tips! :) ' added 5th Sep 2012
