  • How to successfully wear a ballgown as your wedding dress

    May0720135:08 p.m.

You have to feel a bit sorry for the poor old ballgown. It was once the domain of princesses, both real and fairytale, and the subject of every little girl's wedding dress fantasies. But alas, it fell from favour when it suffered terribly at the hands of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. Brides now fear treading into the ballgown arena in case of a terrible wedding gown faux pas. But truth be told, no matter what blows the ballgown receives from less desirable sources, it's beautiful, flattering, and the best friend of many a body shape. Designers know this, and will continue including ballgowns in some form or other in their collections.

So. What's a girl to do? What is it about My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding ballgowns that turns them from something beautiful into the tackiest piece of clothing you've ever laid eyes on? Here are my top tips to help you navigate a ballgown purchase successfully.

    1. Keep the accessories to a minimum

The ballgown is a statement piece in its own right, and although you might be tempted to splash out on loads of accessories, because, you know, it's your wedding an' all, don't. If you want extra accessories, keep them minimal and subtle. Avoid massive tiaras, huge necklaces and chunky bracelets. Stick with fine jewellery or pearls. Tiaras should be kept subtle, or even better, avoided altogether. How to successfully wear a ballgown as your wedding dress

    2. Keep your skirt width subtle

One of the more amusing – and horrifying aspects to My Big Fat Gyspy Wedding is just how huge the skirts are. Watching ballgowned brides attempting to enter and exit cars, carriages and buildings is like watching One Born Every Minute. If the skirt of your prospective wedding dress is going to provoke spacial challenges, it's too big. If your partner has to hang their head out the window of the car to make room for your dress, that's a problem. If you'd love a ballgown, go for a ballgown that has a gently poofy skirt, rather than a vertical explosion of fabric.

    3. Bling? What bling?

Another secret to staying classy yet wearing a ballgown is keeping the wedding gown bling to a minimum. You're already dabbling in excess with your wide skirt – overdoing the sparkles will push you over the top. By sticking with more subtle gown decoration, you'll stay safely within the realms of good taste. How to successfully wear a ballgown as your wedding dress

    4. The spray-tan is a no-no

So you weren't going to go here anyway WERE YOU, but the spray-tan, false eyelashes, heavily dyed hair and overdone makeup is the crowning tacky glory of any MBFGW bride. If you're going with a ballgown style wedding dress, be especially careful that your make-up and hair is done with a strong nod to natural. Of course you can have your hair and make-up done nicely for your big day – just don't overdo it. Try the head-banging test. If you're likely to spray innocent passersby with false eyelashes and bits of fake hair extensions when over-enthusiastically dancing, you've gone too far.
